Natural Annie™ donates a portion of its sales to charity. What charities do you support?

Since there are so many worthy causes, it's hard to chose just one. In 2014, we are proudly supporting the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind based in Smithtown, New York. The Guide Dog Foundation provides guide and service dogs free of charge to people who are blind, visually impaired, or who have disabilities other than blindness, and received the Charity Navigator's highest rating (4 stars) for its financial health, accountability and transparency. Natural Annie™ is confident that contributions to this amazing organization will be put to good use. The Guide Dog Foundation is supported entirely by donations from generous individuals, corporations, foundations, and service clubs. It receives no government funding. Follow Natural Annie's™ support of the Guide Dog Foundation on our Facebook page and blog.

Why don't Natural Annie™ mixes contain wheat, corn, or sugar?

Annie doesn't claim to be a Vet or a nutritionist, just someone who stays informed. Have you noticed how wheat allergies seem to be rampant in humans these days? And apparently corn is a cheap starchy pet food filler with little nutritional value. So we chose  rye, oatmeal, and rice flours as pet-tolerant alternatives to wheat and corn which have longer shelf lives than other specialty flours (such as bean and nut flours.) As for the sugar, that's just empty calories. So Annie figures why load up our four-legged friends with ingredients that two-legged folks should probably limit as well?

Does Natural Annie™ sell in any brick and mortar stores or only online?

The fantastic health food store and cafe, Green Goddess Natural Market, in Lake Placid, New York carries Natural Annie™ products. But if you are not local, you can shop securely on our website. Follow our Facebook page and blog to stay up on the latest Natural Annie™ news and specials.

How long can I keep treats I bake with Natural Annie™ mix before they go bad?

Annie has eaten pet treats she baked and stored for a month and is alive to tell you about it, so you'll have to use your own judgement on this one! But we will tell you that as with all home-baked goods, the sooner you eat them the truer they are to their intended flavor and consistency. Since there are no preservatives in any Natural Annie™ mixes, it is best to keep baked treats in an air-tight container and store them in a cool, dry place. Official shelf life testing in a lab is extremely expensive, and we hope to be able to afford that service soon.

How long can I keep Natural Annie™ mix before using it?

As with all baking mixes, the end product is always best when the ingredients are freshest. Our paper packaging was specifically chosen to be earth-friendly, but the plastic lining was essential to limit moisture and odor exposure. To extend shelf life and provide consumers with a freshness gauge, we include an oxygen absorbing packet in each bag of mix, and stamp each bag with a "best by" date of three months from the date it was packaged. If you will not be using your mix immediately after purchase, we recommend storing it in a cool, dry place, and keep the packaging as airtight as possible once opened.

Are these mixes Veterinarian approved?

Not yet, but we'd love to find a vet to endorse them. Ask your vet what they think – we'd love to know.

What is carob?

First, let's clarify what carob is not: carob is not chocolate. It's a naturally sweet seed pod that be used as a chocolate substitute. To learn more about this wonderful ingredient, you can read this.

My pet is a very finicky eater, will he/she like Natural Annie™ treats?

There's no guarantee, but we've found most pets love our treats. It's possible your pet has a preference for one flavor, so try a new flavor each time you order and discover your pets favorite.

My pet needs to eat soft foods but I want to give him/her healthy treats. What can I do?

The beauty of baking your own treats at home is that you are in control! Not only do you know exactly what your pet is eating, but you can modify just how crunchy or soft their treats are simply by adjusting the bake time. For softer treats, remove them from the oven sooner than stated in the baking instructions. Get to know your oven, as some ovens bake hotter than others. Adjust accordingly.

My pet is on a low fat diet. Is there a way to make these treats fat free?

Yes, there is. Just like with some human recipes which state applesauce can be used as an oil substitute, Natural Annie™ mixes can be made using applesauce in place of oil. We haven't tested all our mixes to confirm ratios, but on average, you can use the same measurement of applesauce as is called for oil. Be aware that the treats will be much crunchier than those made with oil, and you will want to reduce the bake time to adjust the texture accordingly. We also suspect the treats can be made with water in place of oil, but have not have not tested this fat free variation.

If my pet gets ill from eating treats I make with Natural Annie™ mix, who is responsible?

We'd hate for your pet to be ill, no matter the reason. But we're a very small company, so you are responsible for what you feed your pet and the results. Natural Annie™ supplies a product that is fresh when shipped, and when mixed according to the directions has no known ill effects. Please read all Natural Annie product labels to ensure your pet is not allergic to any of the ingredients. We do our best to keep even the slightest bit of ingredient cross mixing, but know that the same equipment is used to make all flavors of Natural Annie™ mixes.
